⚔️ Case 1: Transubstantiation — "Does the bread really turn into flesh and blood?"
🔴 Arguments by the Prosecution (TheScriptureBeliever)
[Argument 1] Terminology Clarification First — Transubstantiation = Change of Substance, the same word
Catholics retort that "화체설 (transubstantiation) is an incorrect expression and 실체변화 (change of substance) is correct," but these two are identical concepts. The official Catholic Latin Transubstantiatio, English Transubstantiation — when translating into Korean, Protestants simply call it '화체설', and Catholics call it '실체변화'. Only the terms are different; the meaning they point to is identical.
[Argument 2] The Official Interpretative Key Given Directly by Jesus — John 6:63
"It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life." (John 6:63)
If one uses "eat my flesh" in John 6:53 as the basis for transubstantiation, they must acknowledge that Jesus Himself provided the official interpretative key in verse 63 of the very same chapter, saying, "The words I have spoken are spiritual." Skipping this key and interpreting only verse 53 literally is ignoring Jesus' own right to interpret His words.
[Argument 3] Internal Contradiction of the 'Essential Flesh' Claim — The Beef Analogy (TYPE-C)
The Defense's logic: "It does not change into physical flesh and blood, but into essential flesh and blood." Applying this to everyday life:
Someone points to a piece of bread and says, "This is real beef." You look at it under a microscope and there is no protein, no muscle fibers, and no blood. When you ask, "I thought you said it was beef?" they reply, "Physically it is bread, but the unseen essence has changed into beef."
If it looks, tastes, and has the components of bread, but you say "the essence is beef," then ultimately, that is a symbol. Claiming "it is not a symbol" while actually using symbolic language is an internal contradiction.
[Argument 4] Reductio ad absurdum — Did the 5,000 loaves of the miracle also become flesh? (TYPE-AI)
In the miracle of the five loaves and two fishes in Matthew 14:19, Jesus took the loaves, looked up to heaven, prayed (gave thanks), and brake the loaves to give to them in the exact same way. The structure is identical to the Last Supper.
Did those loaves that 5,000 people ate all turn into the 'essential flesh' of Jesus? Even Catholics would say "No." Then why selectively apply transubstantiation only to the bread of the Last Supper? This is a lack of consistency.
[Argument 5] The Metaphor of the Cup and the Covenant — Luke 22:20 (TYPE-G)
"This cup is the new testament in my blood" (Luke 22:20)
Taken literally, the metal cup itself must undergo an essential change into a 'covenant (contract)'. Did the metal cup turn into a contract? No. Everyone knows this is a literary metaphor. "This is my body" in the same setting and context is an identical literary expression.
Jesus also said, "I am the door of the sheep" (John 10:9) and "I am the true vine" (John 15:1). Applying magic exclusively to the bread and wine is selective literalism.
[Argument 6] The Jewish Passover Context — The blessing is not magic (TYPE-AA)
The prayer Jesus made while holding the bread was the traditional prayer of thanksgiving (Berakhah) that the head of the household offers to God the Father during the Jewish Passover meal (Seder).
"Baruch atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, ha-motzi lechem min ha-aretz" — "Blessed art Thou, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who bringest forth bread from the earth."
The object of the prayer was 'God the Father', not the 'bread'. Reinterpreting this traditional prayer of thanksgiving as a magic spell that changes the essence of the bread is a product of medieval philosophy that completely ignores 1st-century Jewish culture.
The fact that it is a holy ordinance accompanied by prayer does not change the bread into the flesh of the Creator. It is the same principle that the water in the baptismal font does not turn into Jesus' blood even though a solemn prayer is offered during baptism.
🔵 Rebuttal by the Defense (Catholic)
[Defense 1] John 6:53-56 is a literal command, and the disciples also understood it literally and were shocked (verse 60). The shock is circumstantial evidence that it is a literal command, not a spiritual metaphor.
[Defense 2] The Last Supper is different from the feeding of the 5,000. It is followed by the special institution declaration, "This is my body (Hoc est corpus meum)," and the command, "This do in remembrance of me."
[Defense 3] Transubstantiation utilizes Aristotelian philosophy's concepts of Substance (Substantia) and Accidents (Accidens); the outward appearance (accidents) is bread, but the substance (essence) is the flesh and blood of Christ. It is not a physical change.
⚖️ The Judge's Verdict — Case 1
Verdict: ✅ CONSISTENT (Prosecution Wins) — Transubstantiation has weak biblical backing
- Self-Refutation: Jesus immediately provided the spiritual interpretative key in verse 63. To use the shock (verse 60) as a basis for literal interpretation, one must also acknowledge verse 63 which corrected that shock.
- Undefeated Reductio ad absurdum: Not applying transubstantiation to the identical structure of the feeding of the 5,000 while selectively applying it to the Last Supper — Lack of consistency.
- Dismissal of Aristotle: Overriding Jesus' direct interpretation (verse 63) with extra-biblical medieval philosophy is an E-03.
- Berakhah Prayer Context: Reinterpreting the Jewish Passover prayer of thanksgiving as consecration magic is a distortion of the historical and cultural context (E-07).
Academic Consensus Level: 🟡 Disputed in Academia
⚔️ Case 2: Mass — "Why repeat a sacrifice that was finished once for all?"
🔴 Arguments by the Prosecution (TheScriptureBeliever)
[Argument 1] The Triple Wedge of Hebrews — Uncompromising Legal Declaration
"By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." (Heb 10:10) "For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified." (Heb 10:14) "It is finished" (John 19:30)
The Greek word ἐφάπαξ (ephapax, once for all) is a legal declaration of conclusion, meaning "completed with a single occurrence and can never be repeated."
[Argument 2] The Catholic Catechism Itself is Key Evidence (TYPE-P Boomerang)
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 1367) explicitly defines the Mass as a "True Sacrifice." Catholics cannot run away by saying, "The Mass is simply a memorial."
Core Question: "Finished once for all" (Heb 10:10) and "A true sacrifice repeated every week" (CCC 1367) — Which of these two is the truth? If you cannot answer this using only the biblical text, it is equivalent to a declaration of defeat.
[Argument 3] Regression to the Old Testament Levitical Sacrificial Structure (TYPE-C)
The author of Hebrews explicitly states that the repeated sacrifices of the Old Testament are "evidence of their imperfection" (Heb 10:1-4). If the Mass is repeated every week as a "true sacrifice," it is going straight back to the Old Testament Levitical system of repeated sacrifices, which Hebrews defined as "imperfect."
[Argument 4] Absence of Biblical Basis for Exclusive Administration by Priests
When Paul taught about the Eucharist in 1 Corinthians 11, the recipients were not a specific priestly class, but the entire congregation of the Corinthian church.
"When ye come together therefore into one place (11:20)... For as often as ye eat this bread (11:26)"
The New Testament calls church leaders elders or bishops. It never once calls them by the title 'priest (Hiereus)' who officiates sacrifices. The doctrine that the priestly class monopolizes the Eucharist is something created by the medieval Catholic Church, not the Bible.
🔵 Rebuttal by the Defense (Catholic)
[Defense 1] The Mass is not a new sacrifice, but re-presents (makes present) the one and only sacrifice of the cross, transcending time.
[Defense 2] The Greek word ἀνάμνησιν (anamnesis) in Luke 22:19 is not simple remembrance, but a ritual act that actually makes the event present.
⚖️ The Judge's Verdict — Case 2
Verdict: ✅ CONSISTENT (Prosecution Wins, STRONG) — The repeated sacrifice of the Mass is a direct violation of Hebrews
- "Time-transcending representation" is an extra-biblical concept: ἐφάπαξ (once for all) is an unrepeatable declaration that cannot be removed even with the wrapping paper of "re-presentation."
- CCC Self-Confession: As long as the official Catechism specifies it as a "true sacrifice," the clash with Heb 10:10 does not disappear.
- Regression to the OT Reductio ad absurdum: Repeated sacrifices = Imperfect sacrifices (Heb 10:1-4). If the Mass is a repeated sacrifice, it clashes with the entire thesis of Hebrews.
COMBO: TYPE-G (ἐφάπαξ) + TYPE-P (CCC Self-Confession) + TYPE-C (Regression to OT) = ✅✅ STRONG Academic Consensus Level: 🟢 Mainstream Protestant Consensus
⚔️ Case 3: Marian Intercession & Deification of Creatures
🔴 Arguments by the Prosecution (TheScriptureBeliever)
[Argument 1] Declaration of the Sole Mediator — 1 Tim 2:5
"For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;" (1 Tim 2:5)
The Greek εἷς (heis, one) denotes singularity as a number. It means "the only mediator," not "the primary mediator."
[Argument 2] Being alive ≠ Omniscience and Omnipotence — The Korea/Mexico Analogy (TYPE-C Separation of Ontological Categories)
Catholicism: "Mary is alive in heaven, so she can hear our prayers."
I am alive right now in Korea, and my brother in Mexico is also alive. Does that mean I can sit quietly in my room in Korea and hear the prayers my brother is making in his heart in Mexico like telepathy? No. Even though we are alive, it is because we are creatures restricted by time and space.
'Being alive' and 'being omniscient and omnipotent' are completely different categories.
[Argument 3] The Omniscience Problem of Silent Prayers — 1 Kings 8:39 / Jer 17:10
For Mary to be able to hear and process when hundreds of millions of people worldwide pray simultaneously in their hearts (silently), she must possess omniscience.
"thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men;" (1 Kings 8:39) "I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins," (Jer 17:10)
Either the exclusive declaration "thou only" becomes a lie, or Mary is not omniscient — it's one of the two. Catholicism cannot resolve this dilemma.
[Argument 4] The Boomerang of Misusing James 5:16 (TYPE-P)
Catholicism uses James 5:16, "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much," as the basis for Mary's intercession. However, the example of the 'righteous man' in the very next verse (v. 17) is Elias (Elijah).
Did the Apostle James teach, "Pray to Elias, who is dead in heaven, to deliver your prayers"? It is the exact opposite — it means to pray directly to the living God. Trying to use it as a basis for Mary's intercession is a self-inflicted wound that rather destroys it.
[Argument 5] The Category Error Between the Communion of Saints and 5G Communication
The communion of saints is a spiritual union through the Holy Spirit in Jesus, not being connected to people in heaven via 5G. The Bible forbids the living from attempting to converse with the dead.
🔵 The Defense's (Catholic) Counter-Argument
[Defense 1] The saints in heaven also pray for us (Rev 5:8). Intercession is possible within God's grace even without omniscience and omnipotence.
[Defense 2] Mary implores Jesus (John 2:3-5); she is not one who answers prayers independently. The mediator in 1 Tim 2:5 is a mediator of atonement, and the intercession of saints is on a different level.
⚖️ The Judge's Verdict — Case 3
Verdict: ✅ CONSISTENT (Prosecution Wins) — Mary's intercession is trapped in the triple siege of 1 Tim 2:5 + 1 Kings 8:39 + Jer 17:10
- Misreading the Context of Rev 5:8: It is not a scene permitting prayers to be offered to dead saints.
- Self-Contradiction: While the defense admits "Mary is not one who answers prayers independently," why do hundreds of millions offer prayers in their hearts simultaneously? The claim that "it is possible within God's grace" directly violates the "thou only" of 1 Kings 8:39.
- Failure to Defeat the Category Error: The argument that being alive and being omniscient/omnipotent are different categories was not defeated.
Level of Academic Consensus: 🟡 Prevailing View
⚔️ Case 4: The Doctrine of Purgatory — "Is the Blood of the Cross Perfect or Deficient?"
🔴 The Prosecution's (TheScriptureBeliever) Argument
[Argument 1] Hebrews 9:27 — The Post-Mortem Order is Death → Judgment
"And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:" (Heb 9:27)
Death → Judgment. There is no room for 'Purgatory purification' to slip in between.
[Argument 2] The Thief on the Cross — A Biblical Precedent That Completely Neutralizes Purgatory
The thief on the cross who committed evil deeds his whole life and believed in Jesus right before death. According to the doctrine of Purgatory, he should have gone into the hottest fire of Purgatory. However, Jesus said:
"To day shalt thou be with me in paradise." (Luke 23:43)
"To day (σήμερον, semeron)" is a clear adverb of time. He went straight to Paradise instantly without passing through Purgatory. Jesus' blood cleanses us instantly, completely, at once, without needing the purification place called Purgatory for even one second.
[Argument 3] Purgatory Denies the Perfection of the Blood (TYPE-AI)
"and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin." (1 John 1:7) "For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified." (Heb 10:14)
The premise of the doctrine of Purgatory is that because the blood of the cross was 'deficient,' I must erase the remaining stains through my own suffering in the fiery pit of Purgatory. How can the suffering of a creature wash away sins more perfectly than the blood of the Creator Jesus?
[Argument 4] The Fire in 1 Corinthians 3 is Not the Fire of Purgatory (TYPE-G + TYPE-C)
Catholicism uses 1 Cor 3:15, "yet so as by fire," as a basis for Purgatory. However, if we read the original Greek text accurately:
In the context of 1 Cor 3:12-13, it is explicitly stated that the fire shall try every man's "work (ergon, ἔργον)". The object the fire burns is not the dead believer's 'soul (psyche, ψυχή)', but the 'results of ministry (ergon)' done by the minister while alive — the work of ministry such as wood/hay/gold/silver.
Replacing ergon (work of ministry) with psyche (soul) is a distortion of the text.
[Argument 5] Reverse Misuse of the 'Smartphone Server' Analogy (TYPE-P)
Catholicism: "Even if we pray to a saint, it eventually gets transmitted to God" — using a smartphone server analogy. However, if we apply this analogy literally:
My prayer has already reached Almighty God, the central server, perfectly and 'directly'. Why would God bother to 'transmit (toss)' that prayer to the saints, who are creatures, and then the saints ask God again?
"Let us therefore come boldly (directly) unto the throne of grace," (Heb 4:16)
The veil was torn by the blood of Jesus, enabling us to approach directly, yet making saints into communication mediums overshadows the merits of the cross.
[Argument 6] 1 Corinthians 15:29 — The True Meaning of 'Baptized for the Dead' (TYPE-G Original Language Analysis) (Rebuttal to anticipated claims by liberal theologians active in Catholic circles)
Catholicism and some cults use 1 Cor 15:29, "which are baptized for the dead," as a basis for Purgatory or communicating with the dead. However, we must look at this verse accurately starting from the words.
First, the original text is 'immersion', not 'sprinkling'. The Greek βαπτίζω (baptizo) means 'to be completely immersed in water', not sprinkling water on the head. Even Jesus came up out of the water in the Jordan River, He did not receive water sprinkled on His head.
Second, there are three baptisms in the Bible. Look at Matthew 3:11, where John the Baptist says:
"he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:" (Matt 3:11) [Immediately the next verse] "but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire." (Matt 3:12)
| Type of Baptism | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Water Baptism | Being immersed in water as an outward sign of repentance |
| Holy Spirit Baptism | The Holy Spirit coming upon the believer |
| Fire Baptism | Judgment, that is, the hell of fire |
Third, the core of 1 Cor 15:29 is 'because of'. It does not mean they were baptized "on behalf of the dead," but rather they are baptized "because of the dead." Water baptism? Holy Spirit baptism? Or fire baptism?
The very next verse confirms this.
Verse 30: "And why stand we in jeopardy every hour?" Verse 31: "I die daily."
Verse 29 is about persecutors who killed the saints receiving the fire baptism (judgment) because of those martyrs (the dead), and verses 30-31 speak of the suffering of the persecuted saints. If there is no resurrection, then neither the judgment of the persecutors nor our suffering has any meaning — this is Paul's argument.
Using 1 Cor 15:29 as a basis for Purgatory or communicating with the dead is a misreading that completely ignores the context.
🔵 The Defense's (Catholic) Counter-Argument
[Defense 1] 1 Cor 3:15 "yet so as by fire" points to the fire of Purgatory.
[Defense 2] Purgatory is not for the 'forgiveness' of sins but a place to purify 'temporal punishment'.
[Defense 3] 2 Maccabees 12:44-46 offers prayers and sacrifices for the dead.
[Defense 4] The fact in Rev 21:27 that "there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth" shows the necessity of Purgatory.
⚖️ The Judge's Verdict — Case 4
Verdict: ✅ CONSISTENT (Prosecution Wins, STRONG) — The doctrine of Purgatory cannot escape the fivefold biblical siege
- Dismissal of 1 Cor 3:15 (TYPE-G): In the original text, the object the fire tries is ergon (the work of ministry), not psyche (the soul).
- Failure to Defeat the Precedent of the Thief on the Cross: There is no way to bypass σήμερον (today).
- Dismissal of 2 Maccabees (E-03 Apocrypha): The Jews did not recognize it as canonical, nor did Jesus ever quote it.
- Dismissal of the 'Temporal Punishment' Concept: It is a product of medieval scholastic theology, not the language of the Bible, and "all sin" in 1 John 1:7 is an inclusive expression that encompasses even temporal punishment.
- Reverse Misuse of Rev 21:27: What washes away defilement is not Purgatory, but "only the blood of Jesus Christ" (1 John 1:7).
COMBO: TYPE-G (σήμερον + ergon ≠ psyche) + TYPE-P (Reverse misuse of smartphone server) + TYPE-AI (Perfection of the blood) = ✅✅ STRONG Level of Academic Consensus: 🟡 Debated in academia
⚔️ Case 5: Papal Primacy — "Is the Papacy Established on the Rock of Peter?"
🔴 The Prosecution's (TheScriptureBeliever) Argument
[Argument 1] The Reversal in 5 Verses of Matthew 16:18 and 16:23 (TYPE-L)
"upon this rock I will build my church;" (Matt 16:18) [Just 5 verses later] "Get thee behind me, Satan" — words spoken to Peter (Matt 16:23)
Did the rock of the church speak the words of Satan? Or was Peter's confession of faith (v. 16) the rock?
[Argument 2] Peter's Own Self-Declaration — 1 Pet 2:6 (TYPE-AG)
"Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone (Jesus Christ), elect, precious:" (1 Pet 2:6)
Peter himself, the party in question, directly proclaimed that the rock of the church is Jesus Christ. Peter never once asserted his own primacy.
[Argument 3] Tradition Makes the Word of None Effect — Mark 7:13
Papal infallibility (1870), Mary's Immaculate Conception (1854), Mary's bodily Assumption (1950) — all are things absent from the Bible that were made dogma through tradition. It is identical to the pattern for which Jesus warned the Pharisees.
[Argument 4] The title 'Roman Catholic' is not a disparagement, but the doctrine itself
Catholicism protests, saying, "The expression 'Roman Catholic' is derogatory, so please just call us Catholic." However, this is not derogatory but an accurate name that precisely reflects the core of Catholic doctrine.
The doctrinal core of Catholicism is that churches worldwide must submit to the primacy of the 'Bishop of Rome (Pope)'. It is the doctrine itself that the head of the church is in 'Rome', so why is it derogatory to reflect that in the name?
Catholicism counters, asking, "Should Protestantism be called the American Church or the Canadian Church?" However, this comparison is completely different.
| Category | Content |
|---|---|
| Roman Catholic | It is the core of the doctrine that the head of the church is the 'Roman Pope' |
| Protestantism | The gospel simply came from America; there is no doctrine that a 'specific American pastor' must be submitted to as the head of the worldwide church |
'Rome' is not an issue of origin but an issue of ecclesiastical authority structure. The reason the title 'American Church' is inappropriate for Protestantism is because America is not the headquarters of Protestant ecclesiastical authority.
[Argument 5] 'Mother of God' — The Original Language Debate of Kyrios vs. Theos (TYPE-G Strict Word Discrimination)
Catholicism justifies the title 'Mother of God (Theotokos)' by interpreting Elizabeth's confession, "the mother of my Lord" (Luke 1:43), as "the mother of (God)". However, the original Greek text distinguishes words very precisely.
Elizabeth said "the mother of my Κυρίου (Kyrios)," not "the mother of Θεοῦ (Theos)."
| Greek | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Κύριος (Kyrios) | The office of the Messiah who came incarnated in humanity |
| Θεός (Theos) | The Creator nature that is self-existent from before eternity |
While deeply respecting Mary, the authors of the Bible thoroughly recorded her only as "the mother of Jesus" (John 2:1) and "the mother of my Lord" (Luke 1:43). Not once did they use the title "the mother of Theos (God)".
Catholicism itself admits that "it does not mean Mary created the divinity of God." While acknowledging yourselves that she never gave birth to divinity, why do you insist on a title that mass-produces the misunderstanding among the public that she is the 'Mother of God'?
"Mother of God (Theotokos)" is not the language of the Bible, but a theological product established by the later church at the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD. The safest attitude of faith for a creature is for our theology to stop where the Bible stops.
🔵 Defense (Catholicism) Counterarguments
[Defense 1] In Greek, "this rock (πέτρᾳ, petra)" shares the same root as Peter (Πέτρος, Petros), designating Peter individually as the rock.
[Defense 2] Apostolic tradition is revelation as authoritative as the Bible (2 Thess 2:15 "hold the traditions").
⚖️ Chief Judge's Verdict — Case 5
Verdict: ✅ CONSISTENT (Prosecution wins) — Weak biblical basis for Papal Primacy
- Limits of the petra/Petros linguistic argument: The party involved, Peter, proclaimed Jesus Christ as the rock in 1 Peter 2. This is a self-testimony that no linguistic analysis can defeat.
- Matt 16:23 unresolved: If he were the rock, there is no explanation for why he was called Satan 5 verses later.
- Overinterpretation of 2 Thess 2:15: It refers to apostolic teachings delivered directly by Paul, not doctrines invented by the papacy hundreds of years later.
Level of Academic Consensus: 🟡 Debated in academia
⚔️ Case 6: Soteriology — "Is it faith alone, or must works be added?"
🔴 Prosecution (TheScriptureBeliever) Arguments
[Argument 1] The Apostle Paul's Triple Declaration — Justification by Faith
"A man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law" (Romans 3:28) "For by grace are ye saved through faith... Not of works" (Ephesians 2:8-9) "This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent" (John 6:29)
[Argument 2] Matthew 25 is a paradoxical refutation of salvation by works
The reaction of the saved righteous: "Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee...?" (Matt 25:37)
If they had calculatedly accumulated good deeds for salvation, they would have proudly boasted. However, the true righteous did not even remember their good deeds at all. This is because good deeds were not the cause of salvation, but fruit that naturally flowed out of those saved by grace.
Conversely, the goats were cast out while continuously calculating their own works and merits until the end, asking, "When saw we thee... and did not minister unto thee?" (v. 44).
[Argument 3] Jeremiah 17 — The self-contradiction of salvation by works
If you read Jer 17:10, "to give every man... according to the fruit of his doings," which Catholicism cites, along with the surrounding verses:
Verse 9: "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked" Verse 5: Trusting in the merit of the flesh results in a curse Verse 7: Only trusting in the LORD (faith) results in a blessing
Are you saying God weighs the paltry 'works' that come out of a thoroughly rotten human heart to send someone to Heaven? In an attempt to defend salvation by works, you brought up a verse that completely destroys it — a self-contradictory move.
[Argument 4] The context of Luke 13 and Matthew 7
What the people cast out in Luke 13 said (v. 26): It wasn't "we did many good deeds," but "we have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets." Jesus cast them out not because they lacked good deeds, but because they were people who only pretended to know Him without a genuine relationship of faith.
Even in Matt 7, "have we not prophesied in thy name... and in thy name done many wonderful works?" — those who boast of their works are the first to be cast out.
[Argument 5] Baptism is a sign, not a condition for salvation — The Cornelius Precedent (TYPE-AI Reductio ad Absurdum)
Catholicism teaches that "baptism (sacrament) is a necessary condition for salvation." However, the Bible records a precedent that flatly refutes this.
Acts 10, the Cornelius incident:
When Peter preached the gospel, the gentile household of Cornelius heard the word and received the Holy Spirit by faith 'even before receiving water baptism' (Acts 10:44). "Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?" (Acts 10:47)
Internal salvation (baptism of the Holy Spirit) came first, and the astonished Peter subsequently administered water baptism as a result of the internal salvation that had already come. If it is true that 'apostolic water baptism is a necessary condition for salvation', then it becomes a biblical error where the household of Cornelius was saved even before receiving baptism.
Paul's self-declaration (1 Cor 1:17):
"For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel"
If baptism is the most core requirement of salvation, Paul effectively declared here, "Jesus did not send me to save souls." Paul himself clearly separated 'the gospel, the essence of salvation' from 'water baptism, the outward sign'.
Using Catholic self-contradiction in reverse (TYPE-P Checkmate):
In an actual comment debate, a Catholic believer said this themselves: "I never said baptism is a necessary condition for salvation. It is merely a sure sign of salvation. Salvation is solely the authority of Jesus; creature humans have no business talking this way and that."
This is exactly the framework of Protestant soteriology. Protestantism sees water baptism not as an 'essential condition that gives salvation', but as an 'outward sign of obedience' joyfully displayed by those who are saved by faith. The Catholic believer confessed Protestant soteriology themselves.
And the excellent confession that "creatures have no business talking this way and that" returns as a question of who it was that continuously added 'purgatory', 'indulgences', 'papal infallibility', and 'Mary's immaculate conception' which Jesus never promised in the Bible. Checkmate.
🔵 Defense (Catholicism) Counterarguments
[Defense 1] James 2:26 says, "faith without works is dead."
[Defense 2] Matt 19:17 is Jesus' direct word: "if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments."
[Defense 3] Baptism is a sure sign of salvation, and the Council of Trent declared that the sacrament of baptism is the instrument of grace that washes away original sin.
⚖️ Chief Judge's Verdict — Case 6
Verdict: ✅ CONSISTENT (Prosecution wins, STRONG) — Works are the result of salvation, not the cause
- James 2:26 Category Error (E-12): It is a category error to confuse "the fruit of works that prove the authenticity of salvation" with "works as the cause of salvation." Apples grow because it is an apple tree; it doesn't become an apple tree because apples grew.
- Matt 19:17 Context Misreading: It is in the context of telling the young man who wanted to be saved by the law to "try keeping it perfectly," and the fact that the young man went away sorrowful reveals that humans cannot be saved by the law.
- Jer 17 Self-Contradiction: Verses 5 and 7 of the chapter cited by the defense flatly destroy salvation by works.
- Matt 25 Counter-Evidence: The fact that the righteous did not even remember their good deeds eloquently proves that works are not the cause of salvation.

⚔️ Case 7: Biblical Authority vs. Tradition — "Did the church birth the Bible, or did the Bible birth the church?"
🔴 Prosecution (TheScriptureBeliever) Arguments
[Argument 1] The Trinity was not created by councils — Historical fact-check (Rebuttal to anticipated claims by liberal theologians active in Catholic forums)
At the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, there was only one line regarding the Holy Spirit: "We believe in the Holy Spirit." The divinity of the Holy Spirit was added 56 years later in 381 AD. On the other hand, the Bible perfectly recorded the Trinity hundreds of years before the councils.
| Verse | Word |
|---|---|
| Matthew 28:19 | "baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost" |
| John 1:1 | "the Word was God" |
| John 10:30 | "I and my Father are one" |
| Colossians 2:9 | "For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily" |
| 1 John 5:7 | "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost" |
The councils merely defended biblical truth; they did not create the Trinity. The Bible came first, and the councils only confirmed what was already in the Bible whenever heresies arose.
[Argument 2] Jesus' direct warning — Mark 7:13
"Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition" (Mark 7:13)
The Catholic structure of "Bible + Tradition having equal authority" is identical to the pattern Jesus already warned the Pharisees against.
The medieval Vatican church constantly added things not in the Bible: 'purgatory', 'indulgences', 'papal infallibility', and 'Mary's immaculate conception and assumption'. "No creature should add this or that, except the promised words of the Bible" — this is why Protestantism rejects human-added traditions and holds fast only to the Bible.
[Argument 3] The Word of God gave birth to the Church
Catholicism: "If there had been no church, the Bible would not have been preserved, therefore the authority of the church is higher than the Bible."
However, the Word of God gave birth to the church, and the early church recognized and acknowledged the Word, which was already the truth. Just as a security guard keeping a safe does not become the owner of its contents, the church that preserved the Bible does not hold authority over the Bible.
🔵 Defense (Catholic) Counterarguments
[Defense 1] 2 Thess 2:15 says, "hold the traditions." Without the church, there is no Bible.
[Defense 2] Without Catholicism, there is no Protestantism. Early Christianity came from the Catholic tradition.
⚖️ Judge's Verdict — Case 7
Verdict: ✅ CONSISTENT (Prosecution Wins) — The Bible is not the product of the church, but the mother of the church
- Overinterpretation of 2 Thess 2:15 (E-15): This refers to apostolic teachings directly delivered by Paul, not a doctrinal system invented by the papacy hundreds of years later.
- Rejection of the Trinity Counter-attack: The historical fact that the council defended the Trinity, rather than creating it, actually strengthens the point that "the Bible precedes the council."
- Rejection of the Security Guard Logic: While the merit of preserving the Bible is acknowledged, that merit does not confer authority above the Bible.

🏛️ The Judge's Final Pronouncement
FINAL VERDICT: 7 Wins in 7 Matches — TheScriptureBeliever (Protestant Apologetics Team)
This court confirms three structural contradictions:
① Deification of the Creature: Marian intercession attributes the Creator's exclusive attribute of omniscience ("thou, even thou only," 1 Kings 8:39) to a creature. Being alive and being omniscient/omnipotent are different categories — People living in Korea and Mexico cannot hear each other's inner prayers.
② Premise of Incompleteness in the Blood of the Cross: Purgatory and the repeated sacrifice of the Mass are completely blocked by ἐφάπαξ (once for all, Heb 10:10) and σήμερον (to day in paradise, Luke 23:43). The precedent of the thief on the cross is the most decisive biblical counter-evidence to the doctrine of purgatory.
③ Undermining the Authority of the Bible: The continuous addition of doctrines absent from the Bible (purgatory, indulgences, papal infallibility, Mary's immaculate conception) and equating tradition with Scripture is the exact pattern warned against in Mark 7:13.
The Catholic apologetics team is given a final opportunity to plead: "How can the ἐφάπαξ (once for all) of Hebrews 10:10 and the Mass as a 'True Sacrifice' in CCC 1367 be logically true simultaneously?" If this question cannot be answered solely with the biblical text, the verdict stands.
COMBO Final Activation: TYPE-G(ἐφάπαξ + σήμερον + Ergon≠Psyche) + TYPE-P(CCC + Smartphone Server) + TYPE-AA(Berakhah Passover) + TYPE-AI(Perfection of the Blood) = ✅✅✅ STRONG
💡 Modern Analogy
[Analogy: Restoring the Original Recipe]
The first generation owners (Jesus and the Apostles) left behind a perfect 'Original Recipe (the Bible)'. Over hundreds of years, the head chefs (Papacy) kept adding ingredients not in the recipe (purgatory, indulgences, Mary's immaculate conception, papal infallibility). An employee (Reformers) came forward holding the original recipe, saying, "This is not the original recipe!" Who is the original? Not the old signboard, but the one holding the original recipe is the original. Protestantism did not open a new restaurant; it restored the original form of the first-century early church.
📖 Spiritual Lesson
"Will you stand upon 2,000 years of human tradition, or upon the eternal, unchanging Word of God (the Bible)?"
When Jesus cried out "It is finished" on the cross, the veil of the temple in Jerusalem was torn from top to bottom. It was a declaration that anyone can approach God the Father directly by the blood of Jesus Christ alone, without a human creature priest.
Even the thief on the cross was washed perfectly at once and went straight to paradise by that blood — our only hope is the blood of Jesus Christ alone.
